Anthropic’s October 30 release notes announce the deprecation of fast mode for Claude Opus 4.8, with removal scheduled for November 30. The company says requests to claude-opus-4-8 with speed: "fast" will then return an error and recommends Opus 5.5 for continued use of fast mode; this notice concerns that mode, not retirement of the entire Opus 4.8 model. We did not test API calls.

Google said on October 30 that its Project Suncatcher prototype had generated a response with Gemma 4 on an orbital TPU during that week. The company describes heat and radiation testing as further work and two interconnected satellites as a 2027 milestone. The response test alone does not establish the reliability or economics of a space data center.
